Things to do in Frankfurt, Germany while taking a CELTA

Frankfurt is an old city located on the River Main. This is the sole reason the full name of the city is Frankfurt am Main. The city has two distinct faces our TEFL trainees enjoy. The breathtaking face with the futuristic skyline made of impressive skyscrapers and glass powerhouses. The second face, which is the historical mix of traditional gothic buildings and cobblestoned streets. During your time off as a CELTA trainee, there is plenty to fill your days and lots to discover in the city and surrounding area.

One of Frankfurt’s top sights is the Kaiserdom cathedral with its red sandstone exterior and popular organ recitals. Another top choice is Romerberg, the city’s central square which gives an idea of how the city would have looked in the medieval era. Romerberg is situated in the heart of the City’s Old Town called Altstadt with a striking center and the famous Fountain of Justice, Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen. The St Bartholomew’s Cathedral is also not to miss with its 95m tall gothic style architecture.

The Stadel Art Museum is a favorite for TEFL trainees who love art. There is an exciting showcase of both contemporary and classical European art from the 14th century. For something more somber, the Wollheim Memorial is a reminder of the Auschwitz III forced labor camp with footage taken by workers being shown.

The Kleinmarkthalle market place is a great place to wander around and get a feel of Germany`s many culinary offerings! From the famous green sauce, smoked sausages and fish to pretzels and chocolate, it is easy to spend some time having a look round and enjoying a few tastes as you go!

For a day trip after an intensive TEFL session, you can enjoy the stunning Rhine Valley and take a river cruise, relaxing as you admire your surroundings. Or visit the Black Forest and marvel in the countryside? Frankfurt is such a mix of new and old there is something to suit all tastes.

For the best foodie experience, try the delicious dish called Handkase wit musik which literally means hand cheese with music and made with sour milk cheese, onions and caraway seeds. There is also Frankfurter rippchen made of pork cutlets in meat broth served with potatoes and sauerkraut. To go with your meals, try the traditional apple wine called Apfelwein, prominent amongst the locals.
